The ACSE Framework™ Is Taking Shape

There are moments in every journey when you stop looking only at the destination and realize you're watching something come to life.

This is one of those moments.

Over the past several years, what began as observations from real-world communication challenges has grown into the ACSE Framework™: Audience-Centered, Context-Aware, Simplicity-Driven, Engagement-Focused. It has become the foundation for how I think about communication, how I teach it, how I consult with organizations, and now, how I am researching it as part of my doctoral dissertation.

Today, the framework has entered one of its most exciting phases. It is being validated.

That word carries a lot of weight in academic research. It means moving beyond ideas and experience to ask an important question: Does the framework consistently work when others apply it?

That is exactly what is happening right now.

Communication professionals from across Alaska recently participated in a research survey, sharing their perspectives and experiences. At the same time, trained independent coders are evaluating communication artifacts using the ACSE Codebook. Their work will help determine whether different people identify the same communication characteristics consistently, an important step in establishing the framework's reliability.

Meanwhile, my dissertation committee is expected to challenge, question, and strengthen every chapter I write. Their thoughtful guidance has made this research stronger at every step. It truly takes a community to validate an idea.

To everyone who has completed a survey, served as a coder, reviewed drafts, offered feedback, asked difficult questions, or encouraged me along the way, thank you.

You are helping shape something much larger than a dissertation.

My hope has always been simple.

That communicators spend a little more time standing in the audience's shoes before they write, speak, design, or publish. Because when communication begins with people instead of us, clarity grows. Trust grows. Relationships grow.

The research continues over the coming months as coding is completed, the data are analyzed, and the final dissertation comes together.

Each step brings the ACSE Framework™ closer to becoming an evidence-based model that communication professionals, educators, students, and organizations can use with confidence. I'm looking forward to sharing more as the journey continues. The finish line is getting closer.

And somehow, it feels like the starting line, too.
